Exclusive Interview with Sinead Keenan: Being Human's Nina

Recently, I had the occasion to ask a few questions to the lovely and talented Dublin born actress Sinead Keenan, who plays Nina on the BBC's breakout hit Being Human, which is currently filming it's second season. The TV program has recently finished it's North American run here on BBC America and I believe it has already found a loyal fan base.
In the interview, I wanted to discuss the character of Nina as well as the actress's upcoming appearance in the final two episodes of David Tennant's Doctor Who. Since this is hot potatoes, she had to remain tight lipped about quite a few things which is making me even more curious about the finale.

You play the character of Nina on Being Human, a show that has a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost living together in a house. At first glance it's not a concept one would think could work, but Being Human does it beautifully. What was your first reaction upon reading the script?
My first reaction when my agent tried to explain the concept to me was "Is this for a children's show?". But then I read the script which I thought was amazing! Toby Whithouse is a genius as far as I'm concerned!

Were you ever a fan of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre?
I'm not gonna lie to you, sci-fi-fantasy is not a genre that hugely interested me in the past, which is a bit unusual seeing as I've spent the best part of the last year working in the genre. But I'm slowly but surely opening myself up to those kinds of shows and films.

Your character was introduced in the second episode of Season One as George's love interest. What is your take on her?
My initial take on Nina was that she was a bit of a battle axe! But it then began to emerge that so much has gone on in her past that she's built this wall or front to hide behind. Underneath it all she's just a big softie really!

Nina seems to have some secrets: The burn scar on her stomach indicates a possible traumatic event in her life. Will we get to know a bit more about Nina's background in season 2?
Oohhhh.... All I can say is yes, you will get to know more about her scars in season 2.

It was revealed at the very end of the last episode of Season One that Nina was scratched by George when he was changing into a werewolf, meaning she will probably become one as well. Do you know if that will happen in season 2 and if so are you looking forward to these scenes?
Oohhh, once again can't give too much away! All I will say is maybe she was scratched by George,or maybe they were old scratches?? I know what will happen, but I can't tell you guys. Sorry!!!!!

This next question comes from Sheindie: if YOU had written your role, how different would it have been from what we've seen?
Good question Sheindie, but I don't think I would have written Nina any differently at all. As I said before Toby Whithouse is a writing genius in my opinion, so why mess with perfection eh?

You will be in the final two Doctor Who specials that will feature David Tennant as the Doctor. Can you tell us a bit more about the character you're playing?
Oohhh, once again for confidentiality reasons I can't. Sorry!!

What was it like to be on the Doctor Who set and to work with both David Tennant and Russell T. Davies? Did you get to share some scenes with David? How was the atmosphere like on set?
The Doctor Who set, is one of the nicest sets I've ever worked on. It had such a friendly, family atmosphere. I can tell you that most of my scenes were with David and he is a joy to work with. Russell T Davies is a gorgeous man also. Not only a supremely talented writer but a wonderfully friendly man.

Russell Tovey, your Being Human co-star, will also appear in the final two Doctor Who specials, reprising his role of Midshipman Frame. Do both your characters get to interact? If you do, how was it like to act together again but as different characters?
Oohhh, once again I couldn't possibly say. Sorry!

One last question: What are your thoughts about the recent successes in North America of British Sci-Fi/Fantasy shows such Being Human, Doctor Who and Torchwood?
It is so thrilling to be involved in a production that has been so well received not only in the UK but the US also. I don't know why they've been so popular with the Americans but we're so delighted they are!!

Thank you so much, Miss Keenan, for taking the time to talk with us!

Tennant's Doctor on The Sarah Jane Adventures: First Pics

Digital Spy has released the first pictures of David Tennant's appearance as the Doctor in the two-parter Sarah Jane Adventures episode The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith. This is an incredible Sneak Peak!!!

The episode will air on two consecutive nights: part 1 on Oct. 29th and part 2 on Oct. 30th on BBC One. This episode will later be followed, most likely in November, by the Doctor Who special The Waters of Mars, however a date has yet to be released.

Digital Spy has also included the BBC synopsis of the episode:

Overall story summary: "Sarah Jane has met Peter Dalton and wants him to become part of her life; to become a father to Luke perhaps. But Clyde thinks Peter is hiding a secret or two of his own, especially when he and Rani find an empty house where Peter says his home should be..."

Part one summary: "The Doctor returns on the happiest day of Sarah Jane's life - but a deadly trap is waiting for them all! As the strands of a clever and careful plan draw together, can even a Time Lord save Sarah Jane, on the day of her arch-enemy's greatest triumph?"

Part two summary: "The Doctor joins the battle - but is it too late to save both Sarah Jane and the Earth itself? As the power of the Pantheon of Discord grows in strength, the old friends are separated across different time zones, and must fight to save each other - but for one, there's a terrible price to pay."

Looking at the first picture, you see that the Doctor's Tardis has landed right smack in the middle of Sarah Jane's attic, under the bemused looks of Sarah Jane, Luke, Clyde and Rani. Has it also crushed Mr. Smith, Sarah Jane's alien computer?
With only a few appearances left from David Tennant's Tenth Doctor until the end of the year the fall season announces itself to be an important one for all Doctor Who and Tennant fans.

John Barrowman Meets Matt Smith and Cheats on David Tennant - Sort Of

The Stage has an excerpt of an exclusive interview with John Barrowman A.K.A. Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood and Doctor Who fame.

The interview will appear in print next week, as well as in podcast, but they wanted to offer a glimpse of the interview on their website. In it, John Barrowman discusses meeting the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smitt, and how he felt about it.

Barrowman says:

I have met Matt. I was doing my publicity for Tonight’s the Night and Matt came in to meet the whole publicity department at the BBC. He walked over to me and went, “Captain Jack!” and we shook hands.

He actually said, “I’d love for our characters to cross paths,” and I said, “That’s really nice to hear. I’m really chuffed that you would say that.”

We sat down and talked for about 15 minutes and then he had to go off and do his thing. I turned to the publicist I work with at the BBC and I said, “I just feel like I’ve had an affair — I feel like I’ve just cheated on David behind his back!”

Then I told David and he was like, “You turncoat.” But Matt will be brilliant. Like anything, it’s different, it’s a new energy, he’s younger, he’ll bring a new twist to it.

The article also reveals that Barrowman will discuss season 4 of Torchwood, his upcoming appearances on Doctor Who and possibly having a role on Desperate Housewives.

Exclusive Interview with Wendi Allison - Heroes Key Makeup Artist

Wendi Lynn Allison, Key Makeup artist on a little NBC show you might have heard of or seen called Heroes, is one of those wonderful people you're happy to know and love. Before returning to Heroes for the fourth straight year, she most recently lended her talents to A&E's The Cleaner, and has previoulsy worked on many other television series such as Joan of Arcadia, Charmed, 24; as well as on such films as Dracula 2000 and Hellraiser: Inferno. (I invite you to go to her website HERE to see all the fantastic work she's done.)

Wendi (as we all affectionnately call her) has also been on Twitter for many months now, sharing with us Heroes - and Wendi - fans the behind the scenes of the show, makeup tips, and fun trivias.

It was with trepidation that I decided to ask her for an interview both because I find her work utterly fascinating and because I believe she's one of the most important people on the show.

Without Further ado, here we go!

You are currently working as Key makeup artist on NBC's Heroes. Can you tell us about your responsibilities on the show?
My Dept. Head Lori and Myself are in charge of the Makeup Dept. on Heroes. I myself primarily get put in charge of most of the mild effects and Airbrushing on the show, along with day to day Makeup on our Cast. We are a well oiled machine, the two of us. Lori and I have been working together almost 10 years. ;)

What mainly brought you to this profession?
Purely by accident. I was very young and took a job at a Glamour Photo Studio. I worked with a girl there who was in the biz and was in between jobs. She got offered a show and in turn asked me to come with her and she would show me the ropes. The rest as they say is history.

Who are the actors you are mainly taking care of this season?
Milo, Zach, Jack, Sendhil, Grunny, Ashley, Cris, James for main cast.

Basically, what consists of a typical workday for you on the set of Heroes?
It varies. But the days are always long and usually very intense. You are wiped out by weeks end. We usually start at 4:30 on a Monday and by Friday we are into wrapping (going home) by 5am Saturday morning. Doesn't leave much time for our lives outside of Heroes.

You specialize in mild Special Effects and Theatrical makeup and we do get to see some of your wonderful makeup artistry on Heroes. Can you tell us about some of your favourite work that you've done on the show?
I would have to say all my work with Milo. He is in fact My Character, so we have done everything together. I am sure if you watch the show you will know, Milo has had the most effects outside of Hayden, so we have had a lot of fun. His Scar and the head slices along with some of my bloody effects with Zach have been among my favorites.

You've been working in the industry for a while now, and you've worked on a few other genre shows and movies (such as Charmed and Freaky Links on TV and Mimic 2, Dracula 2000 and Hellraiser: Inferno for film) - Hellraiser: Inferno appears to be the most makeup effects heavy of them all. Did you have a lot to do on this film? What character (s) were you responsible for?
I again was in charge of regular Makeup as well as blood and smaller effects. A special effects Master in our Business Gary Tunicliff does all the intense characters for all the Hellraiser films including his genius creation of Pinhead himself. Hats off to his incredible work on all those films.

In your career, what makeup effect was the most challenging and rewarding for you?
In recent times it would definitely be a Wing Tattoo I had to do for The Cleaner on Actor Gil Bellows. It took 3 hours to freehand it on and with his patience I was thrilled with how amazing it turned out.

Is there anything you would like to tackle next?
Anything with effects and blood. I feel most of my enjoyment comes from this side of Makeup and for me its the most rewarding.

If there is a Science-Fiction or Fantasy movie or show (past, present or Future) you'd like to work on, what would it be?
I would probably say Star Wars, after all, who wouldn't have wanted to be a part of that film? ;)

Thank you so much Wendi for taking time to talk with us!

Zoe Saldana on What She's Looking Forward To in the Star Trek Sequel

SciFi Wire has the story on two things that actress Zoe Saldana is most looking forward to about reprising her role of Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek Sequel:

"To get to go back to Star Trek and see Chris [Pine]'s baby-blue eyes and get to kiss Spock, Zachary [Quinto], and to work with J.J. I couldn't have been in a better environment, from the writers to the producers"

And the one thing she's really not:

"I'm not looking forward to the dress," Saldana admitted with a laugh. "It just means I have to hit the gym two months before we start shooting, so I'm not looking forward to that."

Go HERE to read the article.

BBC, Give Us the Eight Doctor and the Great Time War

One of the most interesting Doctor incarnation of the Doctor Who Series, in my opinion, (besides incarnation number 10 of course) has been the Eight Doctor.

Played by Paul McGann, the Eight Doctor only appeared in the not very good 1996 Doctor Who: the TV movie. Though the movie itself failed to live up to expectations and was rather an interesting dud, the Eight Doctor himself was, in my opinion, a success. He was charming, gorgeous, romantic and half-human (on his mother's side). He was pefect.

To this day, his character has spanned series of countless novels and audio books. Though many wondered whether or not he was considered canon in the Doctor Who universe, the Eight Doctor was duly established as canon in two of the recent Doctor Who episodes. The first one was in the Series 3 wonderful episode Human Nature where a drawing of the Eight Doctor appeared in John Smith's Journal of Impossible Things alongside his 9 other incarnations. The most recent reiteration of is ''canonness'' was in the Christmas Special Episode The Next Doctor where McGann was shown alongside all the other incarnations, from William Hartnell's First Doctor to David Tennant's Tenth.

The Eight Doctor is a figure shrouded in mystery. He can be considered Byronic in nature and he does look the part, with his long locks (a wig McGann was wearing and swore would never wear again) and 19th century style garb. He was the first Doctor to ever (as the British say) snog his companion, Dr. Grace Holloway. Of Course, incarnation number 10 would later amply make up for all the time lost.

We know that in Series One, Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor is newly re-generated; at one point he stares into a mirror during the episode one Rose, and he comments on his ears which he seems to be seeing for the first time. We later learn, through the course of the series that the Doctor has fought in the Last Great Time War against his mortal enemy: The Daleks. However, details always remained sketchy and in the background. The Doctor would mention it once in a while but the viewers were never shown that great battle.

It is a wonder to me, then, that the BBC still has not decided to cash in the populatity of the subject matter. I mean who doesn't want to see the Great War with the dashing Eight Doctor at its helm fighting a fully fledged mighty Dalek Empire alongside the other Time Lords from Gallifrey? And then to see him regenerate into his Ninth Incarnation?

I say it's time they do it. I really wish the BBC would, once and for all, show us the story of the Time War. It's time the tale is finally told - especially with the end of the Tenth Doctor's reign upon us - and the fans be made happy. I am quite certain every Doctor Who fan out there is interested to see it and the BBC should do it before Paul McGann gets too old to reprise his role.

So what about it BBC? What are you waiting for, really?

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew Speak at Dragon*Con 2009

Interesting tidbits about Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew have appeared from the Dragon*Con convention on Daily Dragon Online.

Daily Dragon reports that Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard on The Next Generation, had interesting things to say about his friend and colleague Jonathan Frakes:

One of Stewart’s fondest memories is of Frakes’s first chance to direct an episode of TNG. He said that Frakes was “confident right from the start.” Stewart felt proud to have witnessed the beginning of a wonderful directorial career.

It seems that Patrick Stewart feels that there will be no more Captain Jean-Luc Picard for him. During a comment about a possible cameo in JJ Abram’s movie he said: ''I feel I have left behind a legacy as Jean-Luc Picard that doesn’t need adding to.'' He also called the new movie ''terrific.''

Stewart also had a few words for both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner:

When asked about the opportunity to work with the legendary Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, Stewart joked, “Can you be legendary and be alive?” On the subject of Nimoy, Stewart said he was, “somewhat in awe of his presence on stage.” Stewart was impressed with Nimoy’s humor, dignity, and enthusiasm. Stewart then said, “Mr. Shatner, on the other hand.” A long paused followed, after which he added, “He’s a piece of work, isn’t he?”

Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway on Voyager, also had some interesting things to say about her time on Star Trek.

On her views about being the first female captain on Star Trek, Daily Dragon Online reports:

She said that her tenure as Janeway was the hardest decade of her life. As the third captain in the Star Trek franchise (she didn’t count the space station featured in Deep Space Nine, as “star ships fly”) and the “first girl,” she described a “sense of privilege, terror,” and a “new frontier,” paraphrasing what she called the “Star Trek mantra.”

“Just me and a lot of men, just the way I like it.” Mulgrew cautioned, “you don’t want to make me naughty; it never ends.”

Daily Dragon also reported what Mulgrew said about Trekkers, Captain Janeway's ever changing hairstyle and her status as a leader:

Mulgrew complimented the assembled fans, asserting “these are Trekkers, the smartest audience in the world.” She stressed that there was no need for feminine wiles and romantic interests to establish Janeway as a leader. After some initial battles over her hair style and uniform, the producers left her “to her own devices” and “within two seasons the entire demographic shifted and broadened. You are the greatest audience in the world.”

About her time on Voyager:

She remembered giving “the best I could give” to Voyager: “certainly I tried [with] two little devils, I mean sons, at home.” She warned that you can’t give 24 hours to the job and 24 hours to your children. “You do your best and forgive yourself. It’s diabolical.”

Blackadder to Make an Appearance in Series 5 of Doctor Who?

The Sun broke the story today that Richard Curtis, the creator of British comedies Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley and Comic Relief is set to write a new episode of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith.

About the Doctor Who episode, Curtis teased that:

"There will be a monster. And a famous historical figure will battle the monster."

The rumours flying around are that the famous historical figure making its Doctor Who appearance could be Sir Edmund Blackadder – a character played by Rowan Atkinson - that appeared in four series (one for each time period: Middle-Ages, Elizabethan Era, Regency and WWI). The series ended about 20 years ago.

Whether or not this will happen is still a matter of conjecture. Moreover, if the character does make an appearance, the question remains which of the incarnations will be used, or will we get a brand new Sir Edmund Blackadder? Since only real historical characters have appeared in Doctor Who, this bit should be taken with a grain of salt.

Nimoy Not Coming Back as Spock in the Star Trek Sequel

During this weekend's Dragon*Con, Leonard Nimoy has announced that he will not be reprising the role of the famous Vulcan for the Star Trek sequel which is still in the writing stage.

During the Panel, Nimoy said:

There are no plans for me to return for the second movie. I think the Spock character is very well established as portrayed by Zachary Quinto. And I think if you saw the movie Bill, you'd say the same of Chris Pine.

This is sad news but it doesn't mean that he could not appear in another sequel. However, it is certain that there will be no Spock Prime in the next Star Trek movie.

Zachary Quinto's Hostage: A Love Story

Well, Zachary Quinto and his production company, Before the Door, have done it again.

After the wonderful ''Bordeaux,'' and the funny and weird ''Buddy ‘n’ Andy,'' Zach and Before the Door partners Corey Moosa and Neal Dodson have produced ''Hostage: A Love Story'' which must be one of the funniest things I have seen in a while.

The sketch made for Zachary Quinto’s Funny or Die Channel features the actor himself as a gunman who falls in love with his hostage. In an almost five minute sketch, we see windows in the life of this weird and dysfunctional couple, where Zach’s character holds a gun to the head of his beloved the entire time.

Although everyone is remarkable in their roles, the stand-out performance belongs to Zachary Quinto who plays the gunman with gusto and energy (the police was called in during the filming of the robbery scene because unsuspecting people thought there was a real gunman robbing the shop. It is a real testament to Quinto’s performance and the quality of this production, in my opinion). The actor shifts effortlessly on and off between the foul-mouthed gunman to the sweet and caring man who gets won over by his hostage.

Written by Holt Bailey and Brian Steele, ''Hostage: A Love Story'' also stars Roberta Valderamma in the role of the hostage and also features an appearance by Corey Moosa in the role of the bartender.

Returning Guest Characters for the End of David Tennant's Doctor

Picture 1: Bruno Langley as Adam Mitchell
Picture 2: Russell Tovey
Picture 3: Russell Tovey as Midshipman Frame

UPDATE September 4th 2009: I noticed today that the name of Bruno Langley was taken off the IMDB list. So it seems that Adam Mitchell wont appear for the finale after all.
Russell T. Davies is stopping at nothing for the two-part final story that will feature David Tennant's Time Lord. With the return of many fan favourites such as Captain Jack, Donna Noble and her grandfather Wilfred Mott, Rose and Jackie Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith and her adopted son Luke, the Master and his wife Lucy Saxon; one cannot help to stop and wonder if it can get any better. I discovered that it can.

As I browsed through IMDB Pro, two more character names caught my attention and one of them especially has me pretty much excited.

First listed as appearing in the very last episode (tentatively January 1st) is Bruno Langley who is back as Adam Mitchell, short time companion to the NINTH Doctor (the Christopher Eccleston Doctor) in the episodes Dalek and The Long Game. Adam Mitchell is the only former companion of the new Doctor Who era to not have been brought back during the Season 4 finale. Seems this will somehow be rectified (though his presence has me, and probably many others, simply mildly excited) in this final episode. It may be significant to remember that the Doctor left Adam back on Earth - with an implant in his head - because of his bad behavior. Kicked out of the Tardis he was!

However, the most exciting name for me is that of Rusell Tovey who is returning as Midshipman Alonso Frame in both parts of the finale. Tovey is now better known as werewolf George Sand in the delightful BBC series Being Human which recently ended it's first season run on BBC America. At one point, Tovey was even touted as possibly being in the run to be the next Doctor soon after Tennant announced his departure.

Midshipman Frame appeared only in the 2007 Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned, which also introduced us to Bernard Cribbins as the delightful Wilfred Mott, Donna's grandfather (though we did not know that yet at the time). In my opinion, these 2 characters were some of the best parts of this christmas special which also featured Kylie Minogue (who was not really good in my opinion). Midshipman Frame shone in that episode, although Tovey spent most of his time alone: he only met the Doctor towards the end of the special – but it was a memorable meeting, and my favourite dialogue snippet between them is this one:

Doctor: What's your first name?
Midshipman Frame: ''Alonso''
Doctor, looking stupefied: ''You're kidding me''
Midhipman Frame: ''Why?''
Doctor: ''That's something else I've always wanted to say. Allons-y, Alonso!''

Now, I don't know if Midshipman Frame and Adam Mitchell will appear in flashbacks (doubtful) or if they'll actually take an active part in the storyline; Like Mitchell, some of the other former companions appear only in the last episode of the two-parter – such as Sarah Jane and Rose. On the other hand, both Donna, Captain Jack, Wilf and Midshipman Frame are set to appear in both. We know that the dying Doctor will meet Rose at a time in her past just before she meets the Doctor in his Ninth incarnation.

The presence of all these companions (with the notable exception of Martha Jones and her family who are not coming back, I have to add) makes me wonder if the Doctor will be put through some sort of a trial or if he'll be going through time setting up things. It is clear other Time-Lords are involved and that we will see the Doctor's mother (played by Claire Bloom) in the two-parter as well.

However, these are all conjectures on my part. We'll probably get to know a bit more as the end draws near. Only a few months to go now!

2009 Las Vegas Star Trek Convention: Trekkies!

No Star Trek Convention can be called a proper one without some people dressing up as their favourite Star Trek characters or wearing the uniform of their favourite Star Trek series. Not everyone dresses up at these conventions, but there are a fair amount of people who do. When you are there, however, it feels like nothing could be more natural and I absolutely loved it!

*please not that the ''Bunny Girl'' is not wearing a Star Trek costume but rather one of her own creation.

The Return of Charlie on Heroes?: A Reflection

Nothing has been set in stone but it seems that actress Jayma Mays may be set to return to the role of Burnt Toast Diner waitress and Hiro love interest Charlie Andrews in season 4 of Heroes. We know that Hiro has a bucket list of things to do before he dies and saving Charlie (whom he had tried to save before) must be priority one on his list. But what will it mean for the show and for some characters?

First, if Hiro kills Sylar to save Charlie, it will not be permanent. Sylar is a main character and we know Zachary Quinto is contracted for more years so no permanent Sylar death. Yet. If that's the case, then ultimately something will re-set the past again and all of Hiro's efforts will be for nothing.

Also, if Hiro's saving of Charlie is permanent, then it will be done without killing Sylar. However, there is nothing that will guarantee us that she wont die another way. Remember that Charlie has a blood cloth in her brain and that she will most likely die from a brain aneurysm. Will Hiro have another plan to save Charlie?

I wouldn't mind seeing more of the character and the actress in season 4 since Charlie is a well-loved character. Plus the two actors, Masi Oka and Jayma Mays, have an incredible chemistry together. Only time will tell if her presence on the show will be long or short lived. As of now, it seems she may be on the show for 3 episodes. Ultimately, I really wonder if Hiro will indeed die this year. I do like this character and if that's the case I will miss him terribly. I really do wonder what the writers will have in store for us. Bring on season 4!
